To know whether the concerns over consumption of ghee has any truth to it, News18 spoke to clinical dietitian Dr Priyanka Rohatgi
In the olden days, consuming ghee was considered a symbol of prosperity. Over time, changes in work patterns and lifestyles meant urban residents cut down the consumption of ghee in their daily diet. Increases in cholesterol levels and the alleged risk of heart diseases further led to people shunning it.
But people in villages and many in urban areas too continue to consume ghee, especially with roti.
To know whether the concerns over consumption of ghee has any truth to it, News18 spoke to clinical dietitian Dr Priyanka Rohatgi.
Is eating ghee beneficial?
Before examining whether ghee consumption raises cholesterol, let’s consider its benefits. According to Dr Rohatgi, ghee contains many healthy compounds.
“Ghee mainly contains saturated fatty acids, such as butyric acid and oleic acid. Butyric acid smoothens the intestinal lining, which reduces the risk of inflammation in the intestines. At the same time, oleic acid is considered beneficial for heart health. Along with this, ghee contains vitamins like A, D, E, and K, which are essential for the immune system and bone strength. Ghee is also rich in antioxidants that help reduce oxidative stress in the body,” she said.
How much ghee should one consume?
Dr Rohatgi advised that consuming ghee in moderate amounts can provide numerous health benefits. Generally, an intake of one to two teaspoons of ghee a day is considered safe and improves digestion and strengthens the body, but overconsumption may lead to adverse effects.
How to consume ghee?
Dr Rohatgi noted that consuming one to two teaspoons of ghee daily is safe, but the method of consumption also plays an important role. Ghee contains short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids. Short-chain fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and offer several health benefits. But if ghee is overheated, its short-chain fatty acids break down and oxidise, leading to the formation of free radicals, which can contribute to various diseases.
When Does Ghee Cause Harm?
Dr Rohatgi also emphasized that excess of any food can be harmful. Consuming ghee and roti in large quantities may contribute to weight gain and an increase in cholesterol levels, potentially leading to heart problems. Thus, while ghee can be a healthy option, it is beneficial only when consumed in limited amounts.
