Purpose
The Indiana AHEC Scholars Fellowship Program is an
interprofessional educational program for health
professions students that offers opportunities for
hands-on training, experience in rural and underserved
communities, and networking with other students and
professionals.
This program requires a 2 year commitment and consists of
40 hours of online learning units, along with 40 hours of
team-based community experiences per year.
AHEC Scholars is a program of the National
AHEC Organization that is implemented by local,
statewide, and regional AHECs. Core topic areas covered
in the curriculum include:
- Interprofessional education
- Behavioral health integration
- Connecting Communities and Supporting Health
Professionals - Virtual Learning and Telehealth
- Social determinants of health
- Cultural competency
- Practice transformation
- Current and emerging health issues
Eligibility
Applicants must be in the final 2 years of a health
professions degree program. Students in 2-year degree
programs are eligible to apply.
Eligible professions include:
- Physicians
- Nurses
- Physician assistants
- Public health practitioners
- Pharmacists
- Psychologists
- Dentists
- Other allied and behavioral health occupations
Students in an undergraduate prep program are not
eligible unless they are concurrently enrolled in a
health professions undergraduate program. Pre-Nursing
(ASN and BSN) are eligible to apply on the condition of
successful matriculation into a selected program.
Participants must have reliable transportation and
housing in the region(s) where they apply.

This program is provided at no cost to participating
scholars. Participants will receive a total of $1,800 in
stipends over 2 years.
